I don't even know where to start. Since 1 picture is worth a thousand words, I guess I'll save several thousand words below:

This is the day before Sage's baby brother was born:

Born May 2nd, 2010

Torsten will be 6 months old tomorrow. Sage is growing up so much, I can hardly believe it. She has adjusted amazingly well to being a big sister instead of an only child, and now says she can't even remember before Torsten was born. My children are absolutely in love with each other. That's not to say that she didn't purposefully hit him on the head with a play phone today, but she also told me a couple days ago that she wanted to marry him when he grew up because she loves him so much. Sigh. Weird, but sweet. :-)

Summer Retrospective

Well it's been 3 months since I've updated Sage's blog now. I thought some of you might be interested to see what she's been up to this summer. Those of you who are on Facebook may have seem many of these, but I realize that not everyone participates in that, so here are some repetes, and some new gems.

We'll start with a few from a funky little zoo in WV that we visited on the way up to Ethan Morris' wedding in PA. This was back in May, but I just realized we never posted them.

This zoo had PVC pipe tubes through which you could feed the animals a variety of snacks (provided for a fee at the entrance) These included popcorn, moon-pies (no joke), and little pellats called zoo biscuits. This last option looked the healthiest to us, so we bought a cup full (we still have the souvenir cup). Here are Sage and Aren feeding an Andes Black Bear:

Then she ran out of zoo biscuits, so she fed a rock to another goat. He didn't eat it.
And here she's feeding some hay to a mule. We got some more zoo-snacks after this.

Watch Out, Everybody! She's Two!

Well folks, I've done it again. I've slacked off and waited much to long to update Sage's blog. In my defense, she really doesn't give me much time to use the computer. Any of you that have had a 2 year-old will certainly understand. :-) She can be so amazingly sweet one moment, and then make me pull my hair out the next. But she's very helthy, and smart, and we have everything to be greatful for. At her two year check-up she was measured at 25lbs and 34 inches, which puts her in the 25th percentile for weight and the 75th for hight. In other words, she's absolutely beautiful and perfect. She's talking more and more coherantly, singing more and more songs, and sometimes sleeping most of the way through the night. ;-)

Finally, here are some recent pictures.

A couple from the park about 3 weeks ago:

This picture is from her actual birthday (not the day of the party). Aren's aunt Karen brought over a very nice gift, and a little cupcake to celebrate the day. Sage enjoyed licking the icing. :-)

Here are a couple of pictures of Sage with Rusty, my folks' new puppy. He is an amazingly sweet, affectionate, calm little fellow, and he suits them perfectly. Sage was quite taken with him too.

Grandma Jan and Grandpa Darrell sent her a really awesome wagon for her birthday. Sage LOVES it! We took a walk with it even though it was quite cold this weekend. The wagon is great for this because she could totally bundle up in blankets.

She was fast asleep by the time we got back from our (rather quick) walk. ;-)

Holiday Magic

I must preface this entry by saying that Sage has developed a rather intense dislike of having her mama work on the computer, so this will be a bit of a glossing over of a large expanse of time. I have high hopes of this being only a passing phase, so that I can do a bit better keeping up with the blog in the future. :-)

I do have much to share: In the speech department, 22 m/o Sage is saying more and more extended sentences. I think I counted a 9-word sentence a week or so ago. She can sing the full alphabet song (I'll try to get a video of this soon!) as well as other songs like Baa Baa black sheep and The Itsy Bitsy Spider. She's starting to use pronouns, "I want that", and often says please and thank you without prompting.

Cognitive developments: She has begun playing pretend in full force. She rocks, feeds, bathes, and nurses her dolls, cooks on her new Christmas stove, and plays actively with her new Christmas doll house. Perhaps her favorite Christmas present is a set of wooden "cuttable foods" which she enjoys cutting, eating, and sharing with friends and dolls. Here's a little video from Christmas morning:

We spent Thanksgiving in Kentucky with the Whites, AND Grandma Jan, Grandpa Darrell and Uncle Eric came down too, so Sage got to be with everyone for her second Thanksgiving! We all had an absolutely wonderful time visiting. Christmas was in Minnesota/North Dakota, but we got to be at the Wartmans for the McLain Christmas too. The travel was rather stressful, but it was worth it to spend such special times with loved ones whom we don't see near often enough.

Hiking, dancing, and more craftiness

It has been almost a month since I last posted, and of course Sage has grown and changed dramatically since then. She frequently talks in three and four-word sentences, and sometimes even throws in a five-word sentence (example: "Bike ride, hat on head!" Hat = helmet in this case). She talks almost non-stop, so she gets plenty of practice. ;-) She has also been conjugating some verbs, which is pretty phenomenal. Some of her words still bear very little resemblance to the actual English words, but I can carry on quite a conversation with her, since I know what most of her words mean. Her newer words are fairly accurate, but her older words tend to be frozen at an earlier stage of speech. Tickle is still pronounced "ga-ga," for example.

She is a very compassionate and caring little girl, and is currently particularly interested in mother-child relationships. Every animal she sees in real life or in a book becomes a mama, and she always informs me that the mama gives milk to her babies. She also loves to have me nurse her stuffed animals and dolls. Apparently that is fairly normal for a nursing toddler. She has taken to calling her little friends' mothers "mama" too, and she is quick to ask the mamas for help on her fiends' behalf when they need a hand to climb up on something, or to put their little shoes on. My sweet child loves to give and get kisses and hugs, and likes me to rub her tummy and back as she goes to sleep. She has become quite a sweet little companion.

We had an amazing adventure last weekend hiking at Natural Bridge with my mom, Rachael, Emma, and Nadja, my parents' Danish guest. Watch Rachael's blog for more details, but suffice it to say for now that forest fires, dizzyingly steep, sloping, sand-covered rock stairs, and crutches don't mix particularly well. The forest fire was apparently on the other side of the mountain, but we could smell it very well, and it was rather disconcerting. Sage was not concerned, however, and had a grand time hiking. The rest of us enjoyed the ride up on the sky-lift, and the view at the rock bridge, but the descent on foot was a bit stressful. Here are some pictures from that adventure:

We also went to a contra dance that weekend, and enjoyed ourselves very much. Sage danced with me part of the time, and played with Grandma and Emma part of the time. We left at the break, and considered it a very successful dance outing. Here is a picture from the dance. Sage was obviously having a good time:

I've been in a sewing phase recently, and have made Sage a few more dresses. I hope you all won't mind if I show them off a bit. ;-) I think Sage looks awfully cute in little mommy-made outfits.

This one is from the same pattern as the last little dress I made. It matches the beautiful quilt auntie Deborah made for her:

This one is made from a knit fabric (my first attempt at sewing knits), and it is very soft and comfy. Sage chose the colors. She really loves it so far.

Here's the most recent one, a wrap-around jumper dress. I just finished it yesterday. It's made from a thick corduroy, so it should be really warm this fall and winter. I really like the way this one turned out:

I'm really enjoying making clothes for Sage. It helps helps ease the stay-at-home-mom syndrome by giving me a product I can show at the end of the day, and giving me an outlet for creative energies. Honestly, my mood has improved dramatically since I started being crafty again. :-)

You can really tell how grown-up she is here. Doesn't she look like a big girl running?!

New Little Dress

A what could possibly be sweeter than to hear your child say I love you? Nothing. I'm sure of it. A couple days ago, I was singing a song to Sage that featured those words, and she spontaneously began saying "I love you" to me, and when I told her it would be nice to tell Dada she loved him when he got home, she started saying, "Dada, I love you, Dada, I love you!" and then "Mama, I love you, Mama, I love you!" It really sounds more like "I yuh you" but we know what she's saying. My goodness, I think I must have the sweetest child in the world. Later we talked to Grandma Alice and Emma on the phone, and she told them she loved them too. Dada's heart was completely melted, I think, when he came home to such a sweet welcome: kisses, hugs, gentle pats on the shoulder and multiple assertions of "Dada, I love you."

I also have been forgetting to mention that Sage has been out of diapers for a few weeks now. She is VERY good at sitting on the potty to pee, and she doesn't even need a diaper at night (though we do have to get up to sit on the potty multiple times per night). We think it's pretty amazing for 19 months old! Before anyone gets concerned, I certainly didn't push her to potty train so early. She was "all done" with diapers, and all I had to do was show her that the potty was an OK place to pee.

AND, Sage has been doing so well at eating with a spoon and fork at the dinner, that I wanted to include this little video of her eating soup with a spoon, and not spilling a drop!

Middle of the Night Post

For you, dear family and friends, I am posting after midnight. Computer time is scarce these days, as Sage is actually napping in bed rather than in my arms, so I feel like during her naps I have to do something more useful around the house--like the dishes, or other such house chores. But I wanted to let you all know that my dear sweet child is continuing to learn and grow at a stunning pace. She is now learning lots of words each day, and seems to be able to talk about most of the things that are important to her. Aren caught a 3-word sentence a couple of days ago, and she uses 2-word sentences much of the time. Some recently-learned words are: purple, wet, bike, cat, mess, man, meat, broccoli, yogurt, book, potty. :-) She has begun to have phone "conversations" with Grandma Alice and Emma, which is wonderful. Her end of the conversation usually goes something like this: "Hi," *listen very hard, press ear into phone, smile, point at dog* "Dog," "All done," "bye bye".

Catching Up

July was very busy around here, and then we didn't have internet access for 3 or so weeks, so I'm afraid I haven't even had a chance to update the blog in a very long time. I do apologize. A lot has happened, though, and Sage has done so many things, and learned so many things since the beginning of July, when I last posted. Here are some Sage updates:

She's learning new words at the rate of 1 or 2 per day. Some recently learned words are nap, moon, giraffe, knot, hot, ice and night-night. She has also learned to jump, walk on tip-toes, and do somersaults, as well as sort items by color. She really lives for a good game of Ring Around the Rosy or Jump Jim Joe and can sing the E I E I O part or Old McDonald for me while I sang the rest of the song. Her grasp of the concept of pretend has improved dramatically, and she has just begun to feed her baby doll (with a little paper tag). She has begun to enjoy giving kisses to everyone she loves, including her dolls and stuffed animals. We have also entered the phase of "do it myself"--though she can't really say that, and we had to buy her some shoes she could put on herself, because shoes were getting to be a real struggle. She absolutely must put them on herself, but she couldn't put on her old shoes without help, and she definitely didn't want help. Along with the "do it myself" phase, comes the phase of temper tantrums, and we certainly have some of those as well, especially when it's nap time, or night-night time. BUT, she's also getting better at sharing, and genuinely seems to enjoy playing with other little ones her age. She's such a sweet little person, and I feel very lucky to be part of her life.

A lot has happened event-wise since I last posted too. We went to Allentown, PA (Dada's home town) to celebrate the wedding of "uncle" Justin and his lovely wife, Heidi, and also to celebrate the baptism of their son Del.

Then Sage and I went to Cumberland Dance Camp with my parents, Emma and Rachael, and had a perfectly lovely time dancing, and hanging out with our new friends, Beth and Brad and their 20 m/o daughter, Bridgette. Sage and Bridgette were so very cute together, as they ran down hallways hand-in-hand, and played Ring Around the Rosy together. Sage had a particular affinity for eating Bridgette's snack, but fortunately, Bridgette didn't seem to mind too much. I did get to do some dancing with Sage in a Mei Tai or a Wrap (comfy, soft, simple baby carriers), and she would always fall asleep almost immediately.

We also took another little trip up to the Cincinnati Zoo with Grandma, Emma, Rachael, Aunt Nancy Ann, Camille and Adelie, and it was great to see Sage and Adelie warm up to each other again.

Most recently, Grandma and Grandpa Jodock and uncle Erik came to visit again, and we spent some quality time giggling and romping around with them this past weekend (never enough time, of course)

Grandma and Grandpa Jodock Come to Town

Sage had a perfectly lovely visit from Grandma Jan and Grandpa Darrell this weekend. Even though it had been quite a while since she'd seen them, she warmed up to them quickly and was everyone's darling little sprite all weekend long. On the 4th we walked in the 10k race. My friend Ruth and I had Sage and James on our backs, and Dada and Grandma Jan came along to join in the fun. Then we had a little birthday dinner for mama with Sage's little friends, James and Aiden, and their parents (our friends) Ruth, John, Alexis and Brandon. On Saturday we went to the Renaissance Faire where my morris team was dancing, and then out to dinner with Grandma and Grandpa. Sage made friends with the waitress and entertained the other patrons with her antics and her friendly smiles. She is definitely coming out of her shell recently! On Sunday, Dada's aunt Karen and Uncle Cliff came for dinner and a visit, and again Sage took her job as entertainer very seriously. She had us all roaring with laughter as she bounced on balls, and ran around crazily asking for tickles: "Gi gi gi gi gi gi!"-- translation="tickle tickle tickle tickle tickle!"

Little Sweetheart in the Heart of Texas

We have just come back from a lovely family vacation in Texas with Grandma Alice, Granddaddy Al, Emma and Rachael. Sage thought the airports and airplanes were fascinating, and even learned to say the word airplane on the way there. We spent some fantastic time with Ruth's Family in Austin, and enjoyed discovering San Antonio and the beach at Padre Island. in Austin, Ruth and Phil treated us royally, and Sage had a ball playing with Robert and Roy. She giggled and laughed all day, and had her first experiences splashing in the pool! We also went out on the lake in a pontoon boat (Sage's first time in a boat!) and had fun swimming in the lake.

In San Antonio, we went to the most amazing zoo I can remember, as well as the Alamo, the River Walk downtown, and Sea World. Sage thought the Alamo wasn't all that exciting, but the rest she thoroughly enjoyed, especially the zoo! Ruth's family joined us for Seaworld and the zoo, which made our time there even more exciting. Here are a few pics from San Antonio.

The last stop was Padre Island, Corpus Christi and the Beach: We camped right on the beach at Padre Island, and played at the beach all day the first day. Only Sage managed to escape without a sunburn, but we all had a blast anyway. The next day we thought it wise to stay out of the sun, so we went to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi. Jodocks and Whites on Bikes

We had a really lovely Father's Day yesterday. The day's activity was bike riding, and we finally got Sage's new little bike seat set up. We took a tour of our neighborhood in the early afternoon and had so much fun, though it ran into nap time a bit, so Sage Fell asleep while we were riding. After a good nap, we packed up the bikes and took them down to Berea to ride with my dad and Emma before our big Father's Day dinner. We had all had a wonderful time again, and Aren and I have decided to get a bike rack for the car so we can do some more serious riding on the weekends. Here's a picture from Berea. Note how cute Sage and Aren look on the bike together!!

We finally set up Sage's new little wading pool. At first she was a little scared of it, but then started splashing with her hands, and eventually wanted to stand in it with me, and by the end was actually sitting in the water playing. What fun it was!

I know, I know. I have been remiss. I suppose maybe it's because we haven't been taking very many pictures recently. Here are a few from here and there:

This is from a couple weeks ago. We set up a swing inside made from a wrap because she really, really loves to swing and asks to do it all the time (she knows the ASL sign), but sometimes I just don't feel like walking down to the park, like on this rainy day:

We have since put up a swing in the back yard, which is enormously popular, but no photos of that yet.

Here is a quick picture from a memorial day hike with aunt Emma. It's a little blurry, but you can see the new mei tai carrier I just made for her. She's holding out a flower she had just picked. Flowers are one of Sage's favorite things, and she has recently learned to sniff them!

On the Farm

Sage had the fantastic opportunity to visit Deb and Frank's farm this weekend, and absolutely had a ball. There was so much to see and do! She particularly loved the ducks as you can see from the pictures. She babbled and gestured wildly when she saw them! The puppies were very friendly. One made friends with Aren, and stuck close by him/under him/on him for most of the visit. We also saw a new colt (only 2 weeks old) and some cute lambs. Here are some of the best pictures. It's been a few weeks since I've posted, but Sage certainly doesn't stop growing, learning and changing just because I don't post about it! She has recently come into a very cuddly phase, and has started to give Aren and me hugs. I LOVE this stage!! She just gets sweeter and sweeter every day. She is also started to enjoy helping do things like unload the spoons and forks from the dishwasher and hand them to me to put in the drawer, sweep the floor with the big grown-up broom, and take the clothes out of the dryer for me. She loves to explore new places (without straying too far away from mama--and often holding onto my finger for reassurance). She has been having an especially fantastic time playing outside in this lovely spring weather. We went hiking yesterday with our babywearing group, and Sage very sweetly rode on my back in the wrap, and talked to me about the trees and the birds. Today we played in the backyard for a while and then made our first trip to the "creative playground" at Shillito Park. What fun! She explored all around the huge castle-like wooden structure, climbed up steps, looked over banisters, swung on swings, and made a couple new friends. She had so much fun she completely wore herself out and was asleep in her carseat before we made it back to the road.

Sage has been doing a lot of traveling in the past two days. We've been to Cincinnati twice! On Sunday She spent a lovely evening playing with Adelie again at Aunt Nancy Ann's house. Grandma took care of her there while Mommy and Daddy went to Ikea to get a new Bed. Sage and Adelie reportedly had tons of fun playing together with their matching alligator pull toys.

Then yesterday, Sage, Mommy, Grandma and aunt Rachael came up again to go to the Zoo with the Watrmans. It didn't look promising on the way up, as it was pouring Rain, but soon after we arrived it turned into the perfect day to enjoy the zoo, and almost no one else was there! Sage had a ball. She especially enjoyed the birds, the exotic cats, and the Elephants. We got lots of nice pictures to share!

Well I've managed to get behind again in my posting. I do apologize. Here are some pictures from easter morning:Sage got some cool PVC-free bath toys and a toddler set of dishes in her easter basket. Fun stuff! Then we went to Aunt Nancy Ann's house for a big Easter dinner (we particularly enjoyed the mashed potatoes), where Sage had a fun time playing with cousins Adelie and Hunter. It's so wonderful that she has such lovely cousins so close to her age!

We had more snow yesterday than we have had since we've lived in Lexington, and certainly since Sage was born. Finally yesterday afternoon/evening we got Sage out to play in it. She was unsure of it at first, but she had a good time playing in the end. It was pretty tough to walk though, because the snow was up to her little knees! Aunt Rachael's Birthday

Sage took a little trip down to Berea last weekend for Aunt Rachael's birthday party, and had a wonderful time with family and friends. She got to spend time playing with her new cousin Adelie Wartman at the party and after. What fun they will have as they grow up together! Sage also got to meet Rachael's new kitten, Cuddles, and enjoyed petting him gently and making the sign for dog. :-)

Here are some pictures from Sage's first Birthday. She was a little sleepy (we found out the next day she was coming down with a cold), but she enjoyed herself all the same, and turned one in high style. The Pizza Quesadilla

Directions:
Spread a thinish layer of fancy marinara sauce (we prefer Hunts 4 cheese variety) on a whole wheat tortilla.
Sprinkle with cheese
Scatter on your favorite pizza toppings (we particularly like black olives).
Sprinkle with a little more cheese.
Top with another whole wheat tortilla.
Toast Quesadilla in a skillet over medium heat until cheese melts and tortilla is lightly browned, turning once.
Slice into wedges and let cool slightly while you help your little one settle into her highchair and pour beverages.

There isn't too much new going on at the moment, but cerain relatives have reminded me that It;s been too long since I've posted. :-) So here's what I can think of to tell you. Sage is walking better and better. She really never crawls in fact. Her favorite things right now are music, balls, and water (to drink and play in). She'll be one this Saturday, so we're looking forward to having just a few family members and friends over to celebrate.

Grandma J. came to visit a couple weeks ago. and we all thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her. Here are some very cute, slightly out-of-date pictures from that weekend courtesy of Sage's two grandmas (be assured that the fault for their lateness lies solely with mama).

Doin' The Walkabout

Sage's walking is improving drastically every day. Within the past hour she figured out how to consistently stand up by herself from sitting on the floor, which means that crawling is really no longer necessary. When she falls down, she can just get back up and walk some more! She's quite amazing. I think today, I would really and truly call her a toddler. Oh, and she's definitely got the dancing feet (or hips, as the case may be). She loves any and all music, but especially if its got a good beat! Check out this video --it's sooo three days ago as far as the walking goes, but it's just about the cutest thing Aren and I have ever seen. :-)

Auntie Em's visit

Sage had a visit from Aunt Emma this weekend, and has really had a blast. She calls her Ma, and absolutely adores her. Emma is really wonderful with Sage. Here are some pictures of them playing together in matching outfits:

Emma took this picture of Sage and mommy in our new babywearing poncho (christmas present from daddy!) on our walk this afternoon. There are two head openings! One for Sage and one for mommy!

And a quick update on Sage's walking: She can now take upwards of 20 steps per trip (some times), and I have to say that as of yesterday, walking is now her preferred method of locomotion. Crawling is still much easier, but she usually starts out walking, and then falls back on crawling when walking doesn't take her all the way. Another cool new skill is standing up all by herself without anything to pull up on. She can't do that consistently, but she can sometimes.

Christmas and the new year

Happy new year from Sage and the whole family, folks! I am dreadfully sorry that I have taken so long to put up Sage's Christmas pictures and recent updates. I really have been remiss. But here they are anyway. Some of the pictures are from my parents camera and some are from our camera.

Sage had a really lovely Christmas, with really amazing presents from everyone. I have to admit, she got a little tired of opening presents at some point, so we had postpone opening some of them until later. :-)

She enjoyed very much spending time with the White family and mommy's wonderful cousin, Rebecca during Christmas Country Dance School. Here she is napping with Rebecca:

Sage took a little break from walking during Christmas and CCDS. She didn't really take any more steps until after we were back home. Now, however, she's really going to town. Last night she walked all the way from mommy (sitting on the love seat) across the room to daddy (sitting on the couch). I think I've counted 12 consecutive steps at this point, and 12 steps can take you pretty far! Her other new skill and pastime is throwing/rolling the ball with mommy or daddy. Her throwing arm(s) are pretty amazing for an 11 month old!

One step at a time...

Yesterday, December 22nd, Sage took her first independent steps. She walked from the couch to her grandma Alice, and the whole room erupted in cheers and applause! Then she repeated the feat two more times that evening. Mommy and Daddy are so very proud. Here's a picture Grandma took yesterday to commemorate the occasion.

Doesn't she look like a big girl? Just a few more steps and she'll really be a toddler.

I know that in my excitement about her learning to crawl some months ago, I hinted that walking wasn't a very big deal because she could get around just fine by crawling anyway, but I may have to change my perspective at this point. There's something about walking upright that makes a child seem more like a person to others... and to themselves. Sage is obviously quite proud of herself, and seems to be thrilled to move more like her parents (and grandparents, and aunts and uncle, etc). She's been very interested recently in comparing her body to our bodies, imitating, our movements, and having us copy hers (like chewing on her toys for example. She loves that!). This is certainly a new stage in her little life--one characterized by a new awareness of herself as a person, and culminating in her learning to walk.

I also want to add that Sage's second word is "Dada." :-)

Christmas Tree Hunting

Sage's first word is officially Mama. How sweet of her to do that. She's also signing "more" at mealtime when she wants another bite. I'm so proud! On the level of motor skills, she's working on putting the rings back on the post on her little fisher price ring stacking toy. Here she is with the toy. Look how grown up she is sitting up on her knees! She almost looks ike a little toddler!

She has also put another round-shaped toy on the post of the ring toy, which was even more exciting! I take that to mean she's sorting toys by shape, and making inferences about them based on their similarities. What a smart little baby we have!

Oh, I also must point out that her hair is finally long enough to have her first case of bed-head. This is how she woke up this morning:

Thanksgiving Weekend

Sage's first Thanksgiving was wonderful. Grandma Jan, Grandpa Darrell and Uncle Erik came down from Minnesota, and Sage was lucky enough to spand the holiday with her parents, her aunts, her uncle, both sets of grandparents, and her great-grandma Betty! Here are a couple of action pics as well as a big family portrait.

Since Jan, Darrell and Erik were down from Wednesday night till Sunday morning, we were able to spend a lot of very special time with them, and Sage got reacquainted with them all. Thank you all three for making the trip down! We hope we'll see you again before long.

Reminisce with me!

It seemed sad not to include any early pictures of sage, so I figured I'd go back in time a little, and reflect on how she's grown. Here's a picture of mommy and daddy the day I was pretty sure I was pregnant. Only Aren and I knew at this point. Can you tell we have a secret? I look a little tired. Huh, I wonder why...
By the time I took this one, it was pretty clear to everyone. :-) Just a couple weeks prior to this, I was at Christmas Country Dance School. I felt a little obvious, and got pretty tired out, but I was glad I went. People there were certain Sage was going to come early after all that dancing. :-) Here I am at 37 weeks prego:

Here's a sweet one of Sage at one day old. She's lying in daddy's hand. Look how big his hand seems compared to her tiny head. Her little arms are lost in the "huge" newborn-sized outfit! She was only 3 days early, but was a petite 6lbs, 3oz. Grandma went out and bought us a few little preemie outfits that she wore for the first couple weeks.

I love this one of her cuddled up to her mommy. Even this young, she already looks like herself! My favorite thing to do in these early weeks was to rub my nose in her hair and breathe in her sweet scent. It was so calming, and filled me with the warmth of mommyhood. Actually, I still do this!

This one is one of my all time favorites. She's so sweet and peaceful in dreamland. I took this picture when I was staying in Berea with my parents for the weekend. Daddy had to go to Chicago for a work training, and it was just too early to be home by myself. It was wonderful to have my parents close enough that I could do this!

It's hard to imagine how much she's changed in only a few months! Now she's nine months old, and she has such a personality. She has already learned to be silly, and to do things just to make me laugh. We had quite the giggle party today at lunch time! I really am enjoying each stage, but I can understand why people say it just keeps getting better and better!

Big Weekend

Sage started off the weekend with her first stomach bug. Yuck! She threw up lots and had a really tough time on Friday. Fortunately she was over it within 12 hours. Then Saturday evening we went to a game night, and Sage got to play with her little friends, James, Lily, Alex and Bryce. Gosh, I hope she wasn't contagious still!!! She also managed to get a really mean diaper rash, which we are still recovering from. So Sage is going old-school cloth diapering today: prefolds and pins! Her nice fitteds are in the wash, and I don't want to put covers on her because I want her little bottom to breathe. Plus this way we can tell right away if she pees. This was Grandma Alice's suggestion. Last night mommy and daddy let her crawl around diaper free! That was a pretty messy solution, though. I have to say, prefolds are awfully darn cute on my little baby!

Halloween

Sage went trick-or-treating last night, though she didn't carry a little pumpkin, or anything. We figured that would just be silly, since she wasn't going to eat any candy. She did get one piece from a family who seemed intent on giving her some, and she chewed on the wrapper all the way home. We went along with our friends Bill and Jen and their son, Tyler, who was collecting candy dressed as Spider Man. Here is a picture of Sage in her Halloween costume:

I spent an inordinate amount of time making her costume--especially since very few people actually saw it, and it was dark. I made the shell so that it could either go on the mei tai carrier or directly on her body. Here's a close-up of the shell in better light:

It's made of three layers of fleece painted with fabric paint. I'm hoping she can use it for dress-up when she gets older. I spent way too much time on it for it to be a one-use-wonder. It was a fun night, though! I wish I'd gotten a picture of Sage and Tyler together. Ah well, there's always next year, right Bill and Jen? ;-)

Spaghetti Time!

Well, I think now we've discovered the funnest thing since swinging: spaghetti! Don't worry, it's brown, because it's whole wheat. :-) I didn't feed Sage old spaghetti. She had it the first time last night, but we decided to have it again for lunch today so mommy could get some pictures. It's awfully yummy and fun at the same time! I threw in a little cheese for protein, though really solids are still mostly for fun at this stage. I think more of it ended up in her lap than in her mouth this afternoon, though last night, she actually ate most of what was on her tray, I think!

Oh, and you get the bonus of being able to see her two top teeth in these pictures! Aren't they cute??

One other food-related update: Sage did the cutest thing ever yesterday afternoon. We were enjoying lunch at the Coop with our friend Emily and her daughter Lily, when Sage turned around and offered me a bite of her little piece of French roll. Then it turned into a fun game and she alternated between taking bites and giving me bites. How sweet that my girl is already learning to share!

And now for a few updates:
My previously self-declared breastmilk snob has now decided food is pretty fun (as long as she feeds herself). Those of you who have been following the blog may be a bit confused. Yes, I did post months ago that she loved bananna, and I also posted at some point not long after that she had tried sweet potatoes. However, at some point after that, she decided solids were for the birds, and only breastmilk would do for her. This lasted a month or two. She did enjoy a slice of apple in her little mesh feeder, but nothing else. Well, now she has become a little gourmand. She adores nibbling on good french bread (inferior bread will not do) with some particularly tasty string cheese. Apples are still a favorite (but none of the mushy pureed stuff), as well as good quality crackers. Here she is enjoying a particularly yummy meal of baguette, string cheese and grated apple:

In other news, Last weekend Sage attended her second orchestra concert (at 8 months of age!). We went to see the McLains perform with the Oak Ridge Symphony. Sage slept through almost the entire concert snuggled in mommy's sling, and Mommy was able to enjoy the music. Daddy, sadly was not able to go because he had to study for a test. :-( Poor daddy!

Levi Jackson Fun!

Mommy and Sage spent last weekend at Levi Jackson for a dance weekend. It was a lot of fun despite a few hang-ups: we got somewhat less sleep than usual (Sage and mommy shared a sleeping bag on a dusty mattress), and mommy managed to leave Sage's baby carriers at home, so it was off to Walmart to buy a swath of fabric. Good thing we've been working on using wraps as baby carriers recently!! 4.5 yards of flannel ripped in half lengthwise worked great all weekend! It was especially supportive and cozy for dancing!

And Aunt Rachael always gets the best smiles. :-D

Levi Jackson has a new playground this year with awesome baby swings that go pretty high. The higher the better for this little daredevil! She is definitely her father's daughter. :-)

But the best part of the weekend is that we got to see out wonderful friends Katy and Samuel!! We hiked down to the duck pond and both the baby and the big boy got a ride!

More gratuitous cuteness

Sage got a little hand-me-down baby bathrobe from a friend, and daddy thought it was so cute after her bath a couple days ago, he wanted a picture of it. So here she is, looking quite adorable, I must say.

Since I'm posting, I thought I'd add that her crawling has gotten much smoother and quicker since last weekend. She no longer does the cute leg tuck thing, which helps her move much more efficiently. I have found a new heart-meltingly sweet, repeatable moment, which is holding my arms out to her and watching her crawl to me with a huge, radiant smile on her face. There's just nothing better than that.

Sadly though, she's been having a rough few days, because her top right front tooth is trying to come in, and it's hurting her pretty badly. She wouldn't even let me put her down while I took a shower today, so we showered together, after which we looked smashing in our matching pink bathrobes. :-)

Ok, so these are pretty much just gratuitous cuteness pics to go along with the statement that SAGE IS CRAWLING!! She wasn't actually crawling in the pictures (they are from yesterday afternoon, and she didn't crawl until last night pretty much at bedtime) but she was thinking about it pretty hard here. So far, she isn't crawling very vast. She does this cute thing, where she tucks her right leg under her as if she's sitting indian style, and it prevents her from crawling in a very efficient manner. But she can get where she needs to go... which is pretty much wherever her ball has rolled. Anyway, mommy and daddy couldn't be more proud. If you think about it, crawling is perhaps an even more important step than walking, because it is the start of locomotion. Walking is just an increase in efficiency.

Sage and I went to a protest on Saturday at Applebees. Local folks may have heard about it. Applebees told a breastfeeding mom she had to either cover up or get out, and it sparked lots of controversy. We had fun at the protest, and we got a pretty good response, judging from all the honking and thumbs up signs from passers-by. It felt really good to get involved! It was pretty hot, but sage did just fine. She just snuggled down in the sling and took a nap. :-)

We took a family trip to Minnesota last week to visit Aren's Family. Sage got reacquainted with her Grandma Jan, Grandpa Darrell and Uncle Erik, as well as lots of other wonderful family members. Thank you so much to the family for the yummy food, comfy beds, and wonderful company! Sage especially loved playing with Uncle Erik! Over all, it was a very fun trip, and Sage did incredibly well with all the traveling, new places and new people!! All the same, we have decided that is enough traveling for us for a while! The air travel was fairly stressful for mommy and daddy, especially when we missed our first flight, and were delayed in Chicago for what seemed like forever!!! Mommy forgot to bring the memory card for the camera, but thankfully uncle Erik took over 500 pictures in the 5 days we were with him!! here are some highlights from his copious collection.

Sage looks so tiny in the "great big" baby swing at the park. But now she's big enough to swing in it, so I think she's a very big girl. :-)

We met Jacob and Jackson while we were swinging. Jacob loves babies. Jackson... not so much. He would much rather throw pieces of mulch at his brother. Jacob is building a submarine that can slide down into the water off of a cart, and is big enough to fit one boy and one chihuahua. He plans to use it in the ocean and in lakes (if they are clean enough to be able to see under water) . He also plans to outfit it with mechanical claws that can be used to drag the submarine to land if it runs out of power. What foresight!

Sage and mommy took a bath together last night. Sage splashed and played, and then looked so cute all bundled up in towels afterwards that we had to get a picture.

So yesterday Sage could sit by herself for a few seconds, but would topple over pretty quickly. Somehow overnight she mastered the whole balance thing, because all of a sudden when I sat her up today she just stayed up all by herself! What a big girl! Maybe it was yesterday's banannas that did the trick. ;-)

I had to put this one in too, even though she was getting a little tired by then, and was conserving energy by propping herself up. She gave such a cute smile!

Mommy was morris dancing at the Ren Faire, so the family went out to play. It was very hot, but Sage and mommy tried to look pretty anyway.

Sage was so hot she wanted water. She actually drank a little bit from the cap of the bottle! But we didn't get a picture of that.

She always has a blast playing with daddy, in spite of the heat.

Man, being cute all day really takes a lot out of ya!
